Berta’s Prairie Blizzard
Based on a true story about my mother’s friend, Berta’s Prairie Blizzard flows in the style of award-winning children’s writer Verla Kay.
As Berta and her family move west to find a homestead in North Dakota, they encounter a blizzard which causes them to seek shelter in an old, rickety barn. The prairie winds of spring force them to huddle together for warmth and to survive on wild turnips.
“Wolves howl near, added fear.
Secure the door, pray some more.
Sleep comes hard. Pa stands guard.
Berta’s fright lasts all night ….”
