Called Turkey Day by many, it has become a special time for family feasts and football. With COVID restrictions, however, many of us will be celebrating alone. I’m having a small Cornish hen. How about you? Alone or not, we can thank the Lord every day, not only on Thanksgiving Day.

Eternal Perspectives by Sally Bair

When my children were young, we had to cancel many holidays because of illness. Winter flu, childhood diseases, colds and other ailments meant spending our special days without extended family. And, of course the weather contributed toward some cancellations, too. But we didn’t cancel our habit of giving thanks.

Originally meant to set aside a special day to thank God for autumn harvest, Thanksgiving Day has become special for families—as it should be. However, we can thank the Lord every single day for His blessings over and above the harvest.

The Bible is filled with advice about thanking God every day, not only one day a year. Many of the verses go beyond advice. They’re actually mandates. The passages below remind us of some of God’s gifts, meant to bless us with His peace, joy and salvation. As you read each Scripture, consider reasons to give daily thanks. While you walk the dog or jot your thoughts in your journal or lay in your sick bed, bring to mind the positive things God has given you. Giving thanks can bring the blessings of inner peace, of a better attitude, of release from anger or fear, even of healing.

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night.” (Psalm 92:1)

“O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” (Psalm 107:1)

“O that man would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men! Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare His works with rejoicing.” (Psalm 107:21-22)

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” [Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins] (2 Corinthians 9:15)

“…giving thanks always for all the things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…” (Ephesians 5:20)

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6)

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks for this is the will of God through Christ Jesus for us.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Lord, thank You for all You’ve done for us—for Your indescribable love, for the peace and joy You give as we trust and obey Your Word and for Your daily protection and power. Keep us mindful of the benefits of thanking You every day, every hour and every moment. In Jesus’ name, amen.
