We don’t like to hear bad news of any kind, especially when it might affect us personally. God, however, promises to bring us through any bad news we face and tells us not to fear. With Him at our side, we have no reason to fear.

Fear Not!

Everywhere we turn, we hear about the Corona Virus. It’s on all the news media, Facebook and other internet providers and enough to scare the bejeebers out of many of us.

It doesn’t take much to scare people these days. Most of us cringe when we hear bad news. Our first thought usually is, how will it affect me? My family?

It’s one thing to hear the bad news of a predicted snowstorm, or even about disease or starvation facing thousands in some Third World country, or war casualties, floods or tornadoes. We might give those some thought and prayer. But when an illness spreads worldwide that might affect our own well-being, the news of it can bring panic and paranoia that will spread faster than the disease itself.

But we don’t have to fear bad news. Psalm 112:6-7 tells us that “… the righteous … will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” The Psalm goes on to speak about the righteous man, the person who regards God with holy awe and reverence and trusts in Him alone for his salvation.

The person who reveres God and finds delight in His Word, according to many of the psalms, is not moved by fear and anxiety in times of trouble because his trust is in the Lord and not in himself or in surrounding circumstances. He will be blessed with riches, and even in the darkness, during times when bad news is upon him, light will dawn for him and goodness will be upon him.

Joshua had good reason to fear as he took over Moses’ job of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. But God gave him hope. “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

God makes His point throughout Scripture that He will be our strength and power over any bad news event so that we have no reason to fear. In fact, the Bible contains 365 verses that tell us to be unafraid. That’s a verse for every day throughout the year, surely God’s way of telling us how much He loves and cares for us.

Lord, thank You for Your Word that shows us how to turn away from fear. Keep our focus on You rather than the bad news that surrounds us so we can be like Joshua and face our battles knowing You’ll see us through them. Show us how to turn bad news into good news to those around us who live with fear. In Jesus’ name, amen.
