May your New Year’s resolution for 2020 be to remain on the track God’s Spirit sets before you, no matter what may interfere.

Staying on Track in 2020
My grandson, who works for a railroad company, knows the importance of making sure a train stays on track and on schedule. Frequent inspections are needed to ensure nothing interferes with the rails so the train will reach its destination safely. Derailments can mean injury or loss of life, danger of toxic substances to the environment or delays in delivery of transported goods.
We can compare such a visual example to that of the Christian life. The Bible is filled with the importance of us remaining close to Christ and His teachings. Like trains needing to stay on their tracks, our lives must stay on Christ’s. To do so requires constant inspection of our thoughts, words and deeds. It means being so focused on our destination of loving God above all else and others as ourselves, that self-centered thoughts will not enter our minds.
Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) Just as a train can go nowhere without the tracks guiding it, we cannot make progress in our walk with Christ without His guidance.
We don’t want our Christian walk to be derailed by wrong thoughts or words—by sin. Each day, it seems, we must face more temptations to join in with the world’s pursuits. It emphasizes our need to remain so close to Christ that we stay on His track. “Enter by the narrow gate,” Jesus said. “For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
Those are harsh words. Scary, even. But because of His love for us, His patient leading, it is possible to reach our ultimate, everlasting home with Him. Each day we can ask for His Holy Spirit’s guidance along our earthly tracks.
Lord, thank You for Your Word that shows us how to remain close to You. During this new year, give us wisdom in choosing the right track for our life—one that will help us show Your glorious love to others, fill us with Your peace and joy and bring gladness to Your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
