The sun is shining and the snow is white. God’s blessing to show us that not all is darkness.

Eternal Perspectives      by Sally Bair

Light Overcomes Darkness

As far as weather goes, it seems like the whole country has been engulfed in darkness. The relentless snows and wind make for dark days, dark thoughts and dark feelings that tend to wrap around us like a shroud. We wonder when it will end.

We face many more dark clouds, too. When we focus on the darkness, we see nothing but negatives: incredible self-indulgence among people; rebellion of children against authority; lack of respect; lack of a sense of responsibility; downright evil acts; and rebellion against God Himself. We wonder when the darkness will ever end.

The Bible speaks of such things because such things have been perpetuated since the time of Adam and Eve. We certainly don’t have a corner on the darkness of our world. But that doesn’t mean we should assimilate ourselves into it, nor turn away from it.

Our job as believers in Jesus Christ is to fight against the darkness, just as He did when He was tempted by the devil for forty days. Once victorious, He was able to dispel all darkness and shine the light of His love and forgiveness into the hearts of men everywhere. Like Jesus, we too can, and should, overcome the darkness that surrounds us so His light will shine forth through us into the hearts of those who are experiencing dark days, dark thoughts and dark feelings.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12) When we turn from our sins—our unholy lifestyles, our rebellion against God—and walk in His path of rightness and light, we become free of the dark. Walking with Jesus then becomes a daily discipline of listening to Him through the Word, hanging out with other believers for encouragement and accountability, and carrying on a conversation with Him throughout our days.

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all … if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7)

We cannot determine when our dark, winter days will end but we can decide to walk in the light of Christ. No other path can offer peace of mind, joy and righteousness before Him.

Lord, thank You for being our eternal light. By Your power and love, help us to focus on Your light so the world’s darkness will not affect us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
