Many may disagree, but the Bible states clearly that faith in anyone or anything else is worthless. Jesus is the only way to inner peace, joy, and righteousness.

Eternal Perspectives by Sally Bair

The only way

I’ve taken many shortcuts in the past, including a dangerous one on a one-lane forest road through the Idaho mountains in our motorhome. If I’d had my way, we would have taken the long way around. It would have meant less nail biting and perspiring, more normal heartbeats. More than once, I was ready to get out and walk. We arrived at our destination, by God’s grace, but we wondered if our fear and anxiety had been worth the time we saved.

There are spiritual shortcuts, too. Many world religions believe God can be reached via a shortcut—a supposedly easier way than by faith in Jesus Christ. Some offer peace through meditation. Others accept most any belief, and still others demand that certain works are required to reach upward toward God and perfection.

Christianity, however, is based on the finished work of Jesus on the cross—God reaching downward toward us imperfect beings. It teaches that our works toward perfection are useless and unattainable. Only through Jesus’ willing death, for our sake and out of His love, can we become perfect in God’s sight. He stated, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Jesus validated this claim through His resurrection. Only He had the power to lay down His life and to take it up again. No other religion offers eternal life with Him today and after our death. Because He lives, by way of His resurrection, we too shall live … by faith.

Many believe such claims are incorrect and illogical. Christians are often considered intolerant and narrow-minded. So, what do we believers have to back up the truth that God can be reached only through His Son, Jesus Christ? We have God’s Word. Even today, atheists turn to belief in Christ by reading through the Bible in their futile effort to prove their atheism. Doubters, agnostics, Muslims still find faith in Christ from merely hearing God’s Word. You can, too.

“For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword …” (Hebrews 4:12) And Paul wrote in Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Our faith comes not from ourselves, but it is a gift from God.

Thank You, Jesus, for being the only way to reach our Father-God. Strengthen our faith as we face doubters and scoffers. Empower us through Your Spirit to speak Your truth in order to draw them to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
